A native of Idaho, Josh originally hails from Pocatella, where he was born in a trunk at The Princess Theatre. His father, who carried him out on stage so that he could say 'Hello', remembers specifically that it was a Friday matinee.
Growing up, Josh found himself in a crazy world of dressing rooms and behind the scenes rooms. A strict disciplinarian, Josh's father would only allow the young wannabe star to watch from the wings. However, lured by the pink and amber lights, Josh sneaked out onto stage one day, and from then on became part of the act. He learned quickly the tricks of the trade, practising hard after everyone else had gone. He haunted agents offices, practically ending up a ghost! Finally one day he got into a tap show. It may not have been the most auspicious start to his adult career, but at least it was a chance to eat! He worked hard, hoping for a break, until he was offered the chance to sing in New York City.
Hold on – that's Vicky Lester's autobiography!
Josh loves musical theatre; his first memory is of Julie Andrews defeating the Nazis. When he was eleven, he visited Salzburg and danced around inside the pagoda used in the Sixteen Going On Seventeen sequence in The Sound of Music. Josh is a natural redhead, and he believes that when he is lonely he can simply fill his heart with the sound of music and everything will come out right. He's never had to escape from the Third Reich, and he has never needed a governess.
By the time he was five, Josh had worn out his video of The Unsinkable Molly Brown, starring Debbie Reynolds. He also had a rather unhealthy attachment to a young Judy Garland in Meet Me in St Louis. Maybe it was a redhead thing?
Josh has a degree in Drama and a Master's in Musical Theatre. It amuses him that you can be awarded academic qualifications in such things. He reads Shakespeare for fun and has a marble bust of the Bard in his bedroom.
Josh is a jobbing actor who writes for a London theatre magazine and as such he gets to meet lots of wonderful people. The only time he was ever star struck was when he met Julia McKenzie. Again, it's a redhead thing. Josh's mother tells him his hair is titian. His CV claims it is auburn.
He often goes to first nights where people frequently mistake him for Ant and Dec. Well, more Dec really, but no-one is totally sure which one is which.
Josh admires Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler and Joanna Gleeson... Anyone notice a pattern?
Josh is surprisingly shy.
Josh loves musical theatre because it's a parallel universe where the geek can find true love.
Josh always cries at happy endings.
