Steven Bell

Steven Bell STEVEN BELL is the Director of Vocal Music at Teaneck High School where he conducts the Mixed Chorus, Concert Choir and the award winning Madrigal Singers. He also teaches AP Music Theory and is the director and musical director of the annual musical which include Into The Woods, The Mikado, Seussical, Pippin, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Once on this Island and this year’s Bye Bye Birdie. In addition, Steve taught Choral Methods at Montclair State University. He is also the Artistic Director of the Teaneck Community Chorus, a choir dedicated to, and reflecting the diversity of, the community. He had been teaching music at Leonia Middle School where he taught general music classes, conducted two General Choirs, a Boy’s Choir, and an award winning Chorale and Show Choir. Previously, he has designed and implemented a complete music curriculum at the Dwight School in Manhattan for grades one through twelve, including an International Baccalaureate Degree. Steven has also taught elementary and junior high school music in Teaneck.

For the last six years Steven has served as musical director for the Fair Lawn High School musicals. These include Company (Papermill Playhouse Rising Star Award winner), Will Rodgers Follies, Cabaret, Grand Hotel and Merrily We Roll Along.

Steven holds a Master Teacher Certification and Artist/Teacher Diploma from the CME Institute for Choral Music Education under Doreen Rao. He earned a Bachelors degree in Organ Performance and a Masters degree in Music Education at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. While an undergraduate at C-MU, he was selected to conduct on the annual Graduate Concerto Concert and also lead the school’s Cameron Choir. Steven has also performed as Tenor Soloist at Temple Rodef Shalom and Calvary Episcopal Church both in Pittsburgh, and with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Locally, Steven has sung with the Bel Canto Opera in New York and has served as musical director for many community and children’s theater groups including OnStage, Inc. and the Bergen County Players. He is a Past-President of both organizations. His credits at the Bergen County Players include director of Urinetown, The King and I, Deathtrap, Gypsy, Epic Proportions, Jerry’s Girls, Don’t Dress for Dinner and Baby, musical director for Sweeney Todd, The Most Happy Fella, Something’s Afoot, and The 1940's Radio Hour, and star of Follies in Concert (Perry Award winner), Anything Goes, City of Angels, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, They’re Playing Our Song, The Pajama Game and Into the Woods. In the fall of 2009, he will be directing the first community production of Kander & Ebb’s Curtains and will be working with book writer Rupert Holmes to adapt the script to the theater’s limitations.

Steven is currently the President of the North Jersey School Music Educators (NJMEA Region I) and a member of the New Jersey All-State Choral Procedures Committee. He accompanied last year’s New Jersey All-State Chorus and has conducted the New Jersey All-State Junior High School Festival Chorus, the Bergen County High School Honors Choir, the Bergen County Middle School Chorus, and the North Jersey Region I Junior High School SATB Chorus, and served as accompanist for the Bergen County Middle School Chorus, North Jersey Region I Junior High School Treble Choir, and the New Jersey Festival Honors Choir, Junior Division.
